Abstract:

Objective

To assess the application value of prosthesis assisting postoperative brachytherapy for jaw bone neoplasms.

Methods

From May 2012 to September 2017, 31 advanced malignant jaw tumor patients with jaw defects treated at the Stomatology Department of Xuzhou Central Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were scanned by means of computed tomography. Three-dimensional models were reconstructed using a treatment planning system and the design of prostheses with radioactive seeds was then implemented. Changes of tumor volume and self-evaluation of clinical effects were both conducted to evaluate the clinical effects of prosthesis. Survival analysis was performed by the Kaplan-Meier method.

Results

The follow-up data showed that the overall response rate was 87.1 %. A progression-free survival of 71.2% and an overall survival of 78.3% were achieved at 2 years. All patients reported no pain or discomfort during the treatment, and they were satisfied with the final prostheses of the shape, color, retention, and stability. No obvious adverse effects were observed after prosthesis restoration.

Conclusion

It is effective and feasible to restore jaw defects with prosthesis. In addition, as a carrier with radioactive seeds, it can assist treatment of malignant tumors.
