Investigation of commonly used medical search software and tools by doctors in a hospital in Beijing

Objective

To identify the most commonly used medical search software and tools by doctors.

Methods

A questionnaire was designed and administered to doctors at Peking University First Hospital, including 100 doctors each of higher intern doctors, resident doctors, attending doctors, and chief physicians (50 doctors were≤ 45 years old and 50 doctors were>45 years old).

Results

The most commonly used search software and tools were Baidu (50%) and mobile phone (65%) in higher intern doctors, clinical guidelines (60%) and mobile phone (63%) in resident doctors, clinical guidelines (58%) and mobile phone (55%) in attending doctors, PubMed (46%) and desktop computer (44%) in chief physicians≤ 45 years old, and Baidu (44%) and desktop computer (72%) in chief physician> 45 years old.

Conclusion

The most commonly used medical search software and tools are variable in different levels of doctors, which might depend on different age, educational environment, individual habits and so on.
