Abstract:

Objective

To describe the anxiety and loneliness state of the community hospital health workers involved in COVID-19 prevention and control.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted from February to March 2020, in which 121 medical workers involved in community COVID-19 outbreak control were selected using the random number method from eight community hospitals in Xiangcheng District of Suzhou City. The state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) and the UCLA loneliness questionnaire were used to investigate the psychological status of the medical workers. The t-test, correlation analysis, and Logistic regression analysis were used to compare the psychological status of medical workers in groups and analyze the influencing factors.

Results

The anxiety level of female medical workers on the frontline of community epidemic fight was significantly higher than that of male medical workers and the national norm level (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The anxiety level of female medical workers on the frontline of community epidemic fight was higher than that of non-frontline female medical workers (P<0.05). Presence on the front line of the epidemic fight was identified to be an independent factor influencing the STAI score of female medical workers [odds ratio (OR)=2.81, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.24-6.38, P<0.05; OR=2.97, 95%CI: 1.30-6.76, P<0.01]. The loneliness levels of medical workers in internal medicine and other clinical departments were significantly lower than those of medical workers in medical technology department (OR=0.80, 95%CI: 0.69-0.93, P<0.01; OR=0.86, 95%CI: 0.75-0.99, P<0.05). The STAI score of medical workers was positively related to loneliness (r=0.47, P<0.01; r=0.55, P<0.01).

Conclusion

Female medical workers in community hospitals are more likely to have psychological problems. Medical workers who have little or no direct contact with patients are more likely to feel lonely. More attention should be paid to the mental health problems of medical workers in community hospitals and psychological intervention should be carried out if necessary.
