Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the relationship between glycosylated hemoglobin, thioredoxin, and thioredoxin interacting protein and early cortical cataract.

Methods

Two hundred patients with early cortical cataract admitted to our hospital from October 2018 to October 2019 were included as an observation group, and another 150 healthy patients admitted to our hospital during the same period were selected as a control group. The smoking history, diabetes history, sunshine time, hemoglobin A1C, thioredoxin, thioredoxin interacting protein, and other general data of the two groups were compared. Independent influencing factors of primary cortical cataract were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis.

Results

There were statistically significant differences in gender, smoking history, diabetes history, sunshine time and hemoglobin A1C, thioredoxin, and thioredoxin interacting protein levels between the two groups (P<0.05). Female gender (odds ratio [OR]=1.365, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.015~1.836), smoking history (OR=1.632, 95%CI=1.108~2.404), history of diabetes (OR=1.564, 95%CI=1.020~2.398), long sunshine duration (OR=2.010, 95%CI=1.312~3.079), high hemoglobin A1C level (OR=2.586, 95%CI=1.484~4.506), and high thioredoxin interacting protein level (OR=1.162, 95%CI=1.108~1.219) were identified to be independent influencing factors of early cortical cataract (P<0.05).

Conclusion

Early cortical cataract is associated with sun exposure time, hBA1c, and thioredoxin interacting protein, but not with thioredoxin.

Key words: Cortical cataract, Glycosylated hemoglobin, Thioredoxin, Thioredoxin interacting protein
