Abstract:

The insular cortex is involved in complex networks and has an abundance of connections with the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes as well as the limbic system and the basal ganglia. This small lobe is implicated in an astonishingly large number of widely different functions. This paper mainly summarizes the functional mapping of the insular cortex based on data from neuroimaging studies and intracerebral electric stimulations in epilepsy patients, and discusses the future research trends.
