Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the knowledge of residents in Guangxi on corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19), their psychological response to COVID-19, and their help needs, in order to provide a scientific basis for the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.

Methods

Residents in Guangxi were surveyed online. The questionnaire involved general information such as age, gender, and occupation, knowledge on COVID-19, psychological response to COVID-19, and help needs.

Results

A total of 1803 valid questionnaires were collected. Among the respondents, 1572 (87.18%) residents had adequate knowledge on COVID-19 (≥12), and there was a statistically significant difference in the knowledge on COVID-19 among residents in different places and with occupations. During the epidemic of COVID-19, there were statistically significant differences in psychological and behavioral changes among residents of different genders. Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that different occupations had an impact on perception of COVID-19 (P<0.05), and women had a more positive response to the COVID-19 outbreak (P<0.05). Of all the residents involved, 922 (51.14%) wanted to gain psychological knowledge, and most expected to receive psychological assistance through channels such as WeChat, QQ group, public account, TV, and radio.

Conclusion

After the outbreak of COVID-19, most residents in Guangxi have adequate knowledge on COVID-19, and urban residents have a better understanding on the COVID-19 epidemic than township and rural residents. Some residents are optimistic about the outbreak, and women are more active in responding to COVID-19. A small number of residents feel afraid and have trouble in sleeping. Most residents hope to receive psychological assistance through the Internet, TV, and other channels. In view of the psychological and behavioral changes of residents during the outbreak of COVID-19, doctors, especially grassroots general practitioners in towns and rural areas, are encouraged to disseminate the knowledge on COVID-19 through the Internet and other forms of media and provide psychological assistance based on the health needs of residents.
