Impella is a ventricular assist device which can reduce left ventricular load, increase coronary blood flow, reduce myocardial oxygen consumption, and improve circulatory failure. In the past, it was commonly used in cardiogenic shock and high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention. Now, it is also used in myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. Impella causes many complications due to the fast operation of its axial flow pump and large catheter diameter. With the improvement of equipment and in-depth research, some new ideas are provided for the prevention and treatment of Impella complications. This paper reviews the progress in the application of impella in the cardiovascular field.
