Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the effect of radiofrequency ablation on serum FGF-21 level and cardiac function in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Methods

Eighty patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation treated at Qingdao Central Hospital from November 2015 to December 2017 were randomly divided into either a treatment group (40 cases) or a control group (40 cases). The control group was given comprehensive drug therapy, and the treatment group underwent RF ablation therapy. The two groups of patients were compared for left atrial diameter (LAD), right atrium diameter (RAD), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF%), and serum FGF-21 levels.

Results

LAD and RAD were significantly smaller in the treatment group than in the control group [(36.2±7.5) mm vs (42.5±8.3) mm, t=3.586, P<0.001; (35.3±7.2) mm vs (39.4±8.1) mm, t=2.393, P=0.019], and LVEF% was significantly better in the treatment group than in the control group [(59.3±8.2)% vs (52.1±7.5)%, t=4.098, P<0.001]. Seum FGF-21 level in the treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control group [(145.2±25.6) ng/L vs (197.6±30.4) ng/L, t=4.879, P<0.001].

Conclusion

Radiofrequency ablation can significantly decrease serum FGF-21 level and improve the heart function of patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Serum FGF-21 level may predict the cardiac function of patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
