Abstract:

Methylene blue belongs to a phenothiazine derivative that is a commonly used photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In vitro studies have confirmed that methylene blue mediated photodynamic therapy (MB-PDT) has significant inhibitory or killing effects on numerous pathogens like bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protists. In recent years, clinical studies on MB-PDT treatment for infection-associated skin diseases have gradually increased, and shown therapeutic effect on a variety of infection-associated skin diseases. Compared with other photosemsitizers, MB-PDT has less adverse reactions, lower prices, and good application prospects.
