Health conditions and strategies for care of rural elderly people in Jiangsu Province from perspective of active aging

Abstract:

Objective

To analyze the living and health conditions of rural elderly people in Jiangsu Province and discuss measures that can be taken to improve and implement the elderly care policy in rural areas from the perspective of positive aging.

Methods

A multi-stage stratified sampling survey was conducted on the living and health conditions of rural elderly people in Jiangsu Province using a self-written questionnaire, and descriptive analysis was performed to analyze the data.

Results

The top three prevalent chronic diseases among the elderly in rural areas were hypertension, osteoarthritis, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The prevalence of chronic diseases was 67.93%, and the prevalence of two or more chronic diseases was 39.67%. The degree of project completion was fair. Of all the elderly people surveyed, 43.84% can provide living support to their childre, 37.68% can provide financial support to their children, 54.35% did not live with their children, 15.58% had no pension insurance, and 12.5% needed life care, with the main caregivers being spouses (49.28%) and children (44.93%).

Conclusion

The health conditions of the elderly in rural areas is poor, we should strengthen the health management of the elderly should be strengthened and their health needs should be met. The rural elderly have a high degree of participation in family activities, and necessary social support should be provided for them. The level of old-age pension security is not high, and rural old-age pension security policies in line with national conditions should be formulated.
